Rossend Nobas i Ballbe

(Spanish , b. 1838 - 1891 )

Trained at the Llotja School (Barcelona), and under Agapit Vallmitjana. He was a skilled goldsmith and water-colour artist, a medium in which he continued to experiment throughout his life. As a sculptor, he became known for his Segle XIX (19th Century), better known as Torero ferit (The Wounded Bullfighter) (Museu d'Art Modern de Barcelona (Barcelona Museum of Modern Art)), which received second prize in Madrid (1871). He produced numerous detailed works in fired clay, such as Pagesos catalans (Catalan Countrymen) (Museu d'Art Modern de Barcelona), and the portraits of Elisa Masriera, Marià Fortuny at the Museu d'Art Modern in Barcelona. Also in Barcelona are his Quadriga (circa 1882), created for the fountain sculpture at Ciutadella Park, the Güell i Ferrer monument (1888), and the Rafael Casanova monument, noted for its subtle romantic elements. Other noted sculptors who trained under him in his studio include, Gamot, Fuxà and Llimona.
